Stevens, Joseph W
Lieutenant in United States Air force
1920-2014
The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to 1 st Lt. Joseph W. Stevens, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight on 3 May 1945.  Lieutenant Stevens distinguished himself when his C47 was hit by a flak burst flying over Germany.  His plane lost an engine, the throttle and prop control was gone, the left wing, fuselage, and radio compartment were damaged.  Lieutenant Stevens managed to bring the C47 back safely to a French fight strip near Verdun even though the field was below minimums.  The plane was so damaged that it was totaled.  His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military serve, and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Air Force.
